A blurry iPhone camera is frustrating, especially when the phone otherwise works perfectly. Before assuming the camera has failed, it is worth ruling out the simple causes, which are more common than you might think.
Quick checks
- Clean the lens with a soft, lint-free cloth
- Look closely at the lens cover for hairline cracks or chips
- Remove the case in case it is covering part of the lens
- Try each lens: if only one is blurry, that camera is the likely fault
- Tap the subject on screen to force the camera to focus
Cracked lens cover or failed camera?
A cracked lens cover causes haze, flare and soft images, but the camera behind it may be fine. Replacing the cover is a smaller repair. If the image is sharp at some moments and shakes, buzzes or refuses to focus at others, the camera module's stabilisation or focus system may be damaged.
Vibration can damage cameras
Apple has advised that strong, sustained vibration, such as from mounting a phone on a high-powered motorcycle, can affect the image stabilisation and autofocus systems in iPhone cameras. If your phone lives on a bike mount, that is worth mentioning when you book.
