When a PS5 will not read a disc, will not accept one, or makes grinding noises, the drive may be faulty. But software problems and dirty discs cause the same symptoms, so check those first.
Check the disc
- Try a different disc; if others work, the disc may be damaged
- Clean the disc with a soft cloth, wiping from the centre outwards
- Check the console is on a stable, level surface
Software checks
- Install the latest system software
- Restart the console completely rather than using rest mode
- In Safe Mode, use the option to clear cache and rebuild the database
Signs the drive is faulty
- Grinding, clicking or loud spinning noises
- Discs will not insert or will not eject
- No disc works, including new ones
- The fault started after the console was moved or knocked
Why drive repairs need care
On many PS5 models, the disc drive is paired to the console. A replacement drive from another console will not simply work. We repair the existing drive where possible and explain the options before starting.
