Joy-Con controllers are small, and their thumbsticks get a lot of use. Over time, many owners notice characters or menus moving without any input. That is Joy-Con drift.
Calibrate first
The Switch includes a calibration tool in System Settings under Controllers and Sensors. Follow the on-screen steps for each stick. Update the controller firmware at the same time.
Other checks
- Try the Joy-Con attached to the console and detached
- Test in a different game to rule out one game's settings
- Blow compressed air around the base of the stick
When the stick is worn
If calibration shows the stick moving on its own, the analogue stick module is worn or dirty inside. Replacing it restores normal control. We fit a new stick, test it and calibrate it before handing the controller back.
